En Familia

En Familia is an intergenerational health literacy and health education training program for Latino families. En Familia teaches health literacy skills, including the ability to find, use, and understand health care services and information. Family members participate in En Familia together to support each other in applying new knowledge and skills to manage their health. En Familia is bilingual Spanish/English and uses video to engage participants, illustrate common challenges, and demonstrate new skills. 

After completing the En Familia sessions, families will have the knowledge and skills to:

  • Identify main organs in the human body
  • Explain why an accurate family medical history is important
  • Document their family medical history
  • Identify medical services in their community
  • Describe when it is appropriate to go to the emergency room
  • Describe what makes a medical visit a positive experience
  • Identify payment options for medical visits
  • Make a medical visit appointment
  • Describe their patient rights to:
    • Request an interpreter
    • Request forms in another language, such as Spanish
    • Maintain the privacy of their information
    • Ask the doctor questions
  • Create questions for their medical visit
  • Complete medical history forms
  • Describe the importance of clarifying the doctor’s diagnosis and treatment plan
  • Ask clarifying questions about the doctor’s diagnosis, treatment plan, and next steps
  • Describe the importance of following treatment directions about prescription medications
  • Read prescription labels correctly
  • Identify where to go for help understanding prescription medications
  • Explain when to contact the doctor about prescription medications (side effects or no improvement)
  • Describe why annual wellness visits are important

En Familia trains families across five two-hour sessions:

  • Session 2: Make a Medical Visit Appointment
  • Session 3: Prepare for the Medical Visit
  • Session 4: At the Medical Visit
  • Session 5: Follow Up
